Welcome to CyberCommunities, our class blog that explores various digital neighborhoods. Each week 2-3 people will post articles about their community, which will form the basis for class discussion.
The internet has dramatically changed over the short period it has existed for. In the 1990's, phone lines were the only way to log onto the internet. This was a major inconvenience because it tied up the phone line in the house. now, with web 2.0, all you need is a network connection to access internet information or communicate globally. email used to be the only way to contact another person through the computer, but that has changed over recent years. now cyber communities such as myspace and facebook allows messages to be sent instantly, as well as share pictures and videos with eachother, all without leaving your computer. Also, the invention of web cam allows you to see and talk to another person as if you are standing in the same room as them. If the internet changes this much over ten years, imagine what it will be like in another ten years.
The internet has changed many aspects of daily American lives. One way in which it has changed aesthetics is by having hundreds of cites on celebrities and diets. Everytime i log on aim and aim.com appears there are news articles and pictures on celebrities and what they are doing with their life. Even on Yahoo.com I get bombarded with where Lohan's next rehab center is. This constant exposure to super skinny celebrities may have a negative effect on young teenage girls.
It's so much easier now, declining in significant moments, to meet your "other half" online. By describing how you view yourself to be, a dating site can match you up with how another person views themselves. I'd prefer my own observations of a person I'd potentially date rather than read how easy going and humorous they say they are. We all have an incorrect view of ourselves and they are advertising it.
Through the use of the internet you are able to talk to anyone around the world, all you are is a click away. Now through browsers you can type in virtually anything and get thousands of topics realtiong to your area of interest. What would we do with out the internet , it is deeply intergrated withinn our culture that we would be lost without it.
Welcome to Unit 2 of Cyber 110! In this unit each of you will explore a Digital Neighborhood and write a research paper about your findings. This unit will require you to familiarize yourself with your online community by taking part in its activities; research articles that discuss the history of your community or its social impacts; and share the information you find with the class.
For each class 2-3 people will lead class discussions about their communities. If you are presenting on a Tuesday, you should post a link to your article on this blog by Saturday at noon. If you are presenting on a Thursday, you should post a link to your article by Tuesday at midnight. Everyone in the class will be required to read your article for discussion. Please find articles that are informative and in-depth. They should be approximately 5-20 pages in length.
After the class discusses your article, you have until noon the next day to post a summary/analysis of the class discussion and/or article. Everyone in the class is required to comment on at least two posts per week.
Good luck!
New Addition: After class discussion, you have 24 hours to submit your descriptive post. All other students can submit their comments until the start of the following class.
